What is Multi-Exceptionality?

Multi-Exceptionality or "2e"

"Multi-Exceptional" means a person who has the diversity of giftedness plus "something else". Sometimes this is defined quite narrowly.  For example, in a BC school district a student may be considered multi-exceptional if they are designated as special needs in one other ("2e" or "Twice Exceptional") or multiple Categories within the 2024 Inclusive Education manual.

However, there are a lot of experiences of diversity that are not designated as a Category in the school system, but are experienced as impacting folks' sense of identity and/or experience in school/work/life.  Here at MSOG we include all types of diversities within our understanding of multi-exceptionality.  This is why we say "gifted plus" one or more other types of diversities experienced as a difference.  Often these differences will be experienced as multiple challenges, or some parts of self that are working well in an environment, and others that take some creative adaptation(s).

This could include things like gifted plus:

  • Other types of neurodiversity, such as ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorder

  • Other types of learning differences or difficulties such as a learning disability or processing issue

  • Social-emotional experiences or challenges such as anxiety
